History on Sikhism

There are currently about 24 million Sikhs worldwide. The majority live in the Indian state of Punjab. They regard Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469–1539) as the founder of their faith and Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708), the tenth Guru, as the Guru who formalised their religion.

The ten gurus of Sikhs
  1. Guru Nanak (1469-1539)
  2. Guru Angad (1504-1552)
  3. Guru Amar Das (1479-1574)
  4. Guru Ram Das (1534-1581)
  5. Guru Arjan (1563-1606)
  6. Guru Hargobind (1595-1644)
  7. Guru Har Rai (1630-1661)
  8. Guru Har Krishan (1656-1664)
  9. Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621-1675)
  10. Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708)

Each of the ten Sikh Gurus worked to nurture the Sikh community, and over time, the community underwent its own growth of responsibility. It went from bearing a small amount of influence during the time of Guru Nanak to being consulted by the Sikh Gurus in major decision-making moments. The community’s influence culminated in 1699 CE, when Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, called on all Sikhs to gather in the city of Anandpur on Vaisakhi, the day that traditionally marked the celebration of the harvest festival.

Why was the Mughal-Sikh war fought?

In the battle against the Mughals, Guru Gobind Singh tried to help the kings of the hill states in the Battle of Nadaun in 1690. Ironically, the kings of hill states went to war with Guruji. It made him realise that the Sikhs would have to fight for themselves to uphold and preserve the values of Sikhism. Thus, he established the brotherhood of the Sikhs, also known as Khalsa.

Guru Gobind Singh sacrificed his four Sahibzadas to protect the culture and religion of India in the battle of Chamkaur

Who started langar?

The langar (or free kitchen) was introduced by Guru Nanak , who was the founder of Sikhism and the first Guru, because of his belief in the oneness of humanity . He offered free meals to everyone, regardless of their caste , gender or wealth. It was a place where everyone gathered and ate together.

Who made panch piare and why?

Guru Gobind Singh established the institution of Panj Piare while founding the Khalsa on the day of Baisakhi in 1699. To preserve the culture, Guru Gobind Singh asked for five men willing to surrender their lives for him and the cause.

The three key pillars of Sikhism are Kirat Karni (honest living), Vand Chakna (sharing with others) and Naam Japna (focus on God).

There is no unpleasantness between you and me and between the Guru
and you as a sangat. Neither Guru likes negativity nor I like negativity.
